Jordan Akustik was appointed acoustic consultant to this the first project at Lincoln Center by the architect Philip Johnson in 1959. The theatre intended for ballet, light opera and musicals was large to european standards, 2800 people in a volume of 20.000 m3.

At the inauguration in 1964 with a mainly Balanchine ballet performance the critics were enthusiastic about the acoustics. With 90% capacity audience the RT was measured to an average of 1.55 sec. throughout the frequency range.
